From Industrial Roots
to Architectural Icon
Our story begins in 1936, when this very building was constructed as a light industrial warehouse, part of a significant wave of development that shaped SoMa during the 1930s. Its design proudly reflects the era's distinctive Art Deco and Art Moderne influences, characterized by streamlined facades, bold geometric details, and the iconic steel-sash windows that define its 1930s industrial aesthetic. As a recognized contributor to the architectural character of the Western SoMa Light Industrial Historic District, our building stands as a testament to a bygone era, beautifully preserved.
SoMa's Underdog Legacy: A Gritty, Creative Spirit
The South of Market (SoMa) neighborhood itself has undergone a remarkable transformation. From its 19th-century origins as bustling docks and residential hotels, it evolved into a hub of auto-repair shops and industrial buildings – setting the scene for unique spaces like ours to emerge. This evolution forged a powerful underdog legacy for SoMa: a spirit that is gritty, blue-collar, creative, and often unsung. This raw, authentic energy is precisely what The Foundry now embodies and invites into its ongoing story.
Formerly Folsom Street Foundry
Our building's history is also deeply intertwined with SoMa's vibrant cultural tapestry.
By 1966, iconic spots like Febe’s (at the corner of 11th & Folsom) and The Stud (which opened the same year) anchored what became famously known as SoMa’s “Miracle Mile” – a powerful zone of LGBTQ+ nightlife, including gay bars, bathhouses, and sex clubs. Throughout the 1970s, the area between 7th and 12th Streets flourished with legendary venues like Ramrod, The Brig, and Phoenix.
It was within this rich context that our location was previously known as Folsom Street Foundry, continuing the tradition of being a gathering place where diverse communities came together to innovate, connect, and celebrate.
